Ahhhh, you weren’t paying attention were you? To be honest unless you also follow my Instagram you may not have noticed. I took a break. a BIG one really, a month without writing, or travelling.
Why? you may ask. Well….let me tell you a story…..
I started this blog to replace my Cowboy and Brit blog. A very successful blog about my love affair with an American, the trails and tribulations of maintaining a relationship over the distance, the six months living in the USA to see if we ‘worked’ and the return to Blighty. When we got married in January this year, it sort of became redundant. So I started delightful Dorset. It gave me creative outlet. It was a place to write about all the wonderful places in and around this lovely part of the UK.
That was great during the winter months, when he first arrived in the country, when we lived in a little house with a small garden without pets. Reading through the archive will tell you stories of our travels, and we had fun, oh, bucket loads. I took photos, which have slowly improved over time, I have lots of delicious new software for editing.
It then started to get a bit competitive. If there is one thing I am, and cannot tame no matter how hard I try, it’s competitive.
So, I upgraded my WordPress Theme. I wanted to get something a bit more ‘professional’ with more than one landing page.
I changed my Instagram account to a business account, I already had over 900 followers for my travel photos anyway, so I just split out my personal account and concentrated on generating traffic.
I signed up with some lovely ladies who offered free advice to increase traffic, engagement and gain likes on Instagram, Facebook and the blog.
I joined groups.
I upgraded my Pinterest account to a business account.
I signed up to Tailwind so I could manage my posts.
I planned the best places to go for the best photos and the best blog posts. What do people want to see? what would be interesting?
I enjoyed it all..even learning about SEO
Then, one day, hubby and I had a newly wed tiff. Well, I suppose tiff is a very non-committal way of saying, a huge blazing row. Like everything in our life, we row very well, it could become a blood sport and we could sell tickets, and in this row he said something. Something which was only said to shut me down but something which did exactly what it was intended to do..it hit bullseye “no-one reads your boring bloody blog anyway” OUCH! that hurt.
At this juncture I would like to point out, that despite what people tell you, marriage isn’t perfect, and the first year of marriage isn’t wedded bliss. It’s ecstatic highs, punctuated by infuriating annoyances, arguments and temper tantrums. He wanted a successful feisty woman, he got what he wanted.
I mulled over that comment for days.
I suddenly thought…”what the hell am I doing?” I started this blog for my pure enjoyment, it doesn’t matter to me whether one iddy biddy person reads it, I write because it gives me pleasure, I take photos because it gives me pleasure. So I stopped. And I have re-evaluated my position.
I have a successful career, a demanding one nonetheless, and there are quite frankly weekends when I don’t want to go flouncing off to another Castle. It is also the height of summer, and I don’t know if you ever got this, but I HATE crowds and I HATE traffic and I will NEVER queue for anything. So when my blog started to slowly dictate what I needed to do at the weekends, I became a slave to it, ever so insidiously it morphed into a bit of a monster, and that folks is entirely my fault.
So here we are.
I don’t need to make money from my blog. I don’t need people to read it. I certainly don’t need to feel stressed about the fact that I didn’t do a damned thing this weekend except enjoy the garden of my fabulous new house. So there you go.
Stop reading if you wish.
Start reading if you wish.
This post is a u-turn. I will of course post delightful places to visit and wonderful places to eat, but I will also post photos of my cats, rants about my husband, rants about life (I like ranting) and just general chit-chat and photos and things I enjoy. I apologise not one jot, I do not write for you, my audience, I write for me. A wittering, rambling, ranting, poorly punctuated with dreadful grammar (thank god for spell check) honest and much more general view of MY Delightful Dorset.
